February 18th, 2011. I will forever remember this date, mainly because it was 2 days before my 14th birthday. During the winter season of 2010, I kept getting on and off sickness. I would get severe headaches, nausea, vomiting, and occasional back pain. I just thought it was the common cold, no big deal. In February I recall going to this website were you enter your symptoms and the website would tell you what was wrong with you. I not sure what I entered (probably extreme thirst and urination), but the website said Type 1 & 2 Diabetes, and Diabetic Ketoacidosis. I remember telling my friend Maddie that I thought I had Diabetes. She told me, "Taylor, you're not diabetic, my grandpa has diabetes and you're nothing like him." I thought hmm, maybe she's right, isn't diabetes an over weight person problem? Around February 16th, my sickness was getting worse. So, for the next couple I stayed home from school. On the 18th, I couldn't keep any food or liquid down, and pretty much slept all day. Around 9 pm, my parents had set up blankets on the couch, just so they could see me from their bedroom. I laid there feeling like on the verge of death. I remember telling my mom, "I'm thirsty and my throat burns." She went and retrieved a glass full of orange juice. Of course it burned my throat on the way down, but hey, I love orange juice and I was thirsty. So I laid there for a while, just thinking about being so tired. All of a sudden my lower back started to hurt so bad, almost to the point of tears. Then it came. Vomit. I ran to the bathroom where I spent a good 5 minutes throwing up. I then remember lying on the cool floor, slipping in and out of consciousness. I assume it was around 10 pm at this point. My parents then came in and found me on the floor. "We're getting your stuff, we're heading to the hospital." My dad came in and gave me my coat and boots. I stumbled out to the car, and the car ride I don't remember much.
When we got there, we sat in the ER which was full of people. I guess they saw I was on the verge of death, so they took me in before anyone else. They took me into the little consultant room where I think a man took my blood pressure and checked my heart rate. I'm not really sure what happened next, but I was in ER room beds with a heated blanket. I remember the doctors saying, "She has type one diabetes." I knew it. From there, everything was really blurry. I know I spent 3 days in the ICU slipping in and out of consciousness. On the third day, I remember dying for food, but on the morning of the forth day I got breakfast, thank goodness. Day 4 I got moved a floor down to pediatrics. When I got there, there was two nurses there writing my sliding scale & carb ratio on the big white board in my room. I picked up real fast on what I had to do. But when lunch came, the nurse told me I had to give my own insulin. I was like, "Excuse me? I don't even know how to." So she said she'd do it, but next time I had to. When it came to dinner, I remember hesitating with the insulin pen above me. Then I jabbed it into me. I smiled because I managed to do it myself. The next couple days I learned more, saw some more doctors and a dietitian. Family brought presents for my birthday and balloons & flowers. The doctor said he ordered a sugar free cake for me, but I never got it -__-.
This was the start of my new life. My complicated life.
